How to Set Up RetroPie with USB Controllers
RetroPie turns your Raspberry Pi into a dedicated retro gaming console. All Controller Den USB controllers work instantly when plugged in. This guide walks you through the complete setup from scratch.
What You Need
A Raspberry Pi (3 or 4 recommended), a microSD card (16GB+), a USB retro controller, and the RetroPie image (free download).
Step-by-Step Setup
- Download the RetroPie image from retropie.org.uk for your Pi model
- Download and install Raspberry Pi Imager from raspberrypi.com
- Flash the RetroPie image to your microSD card using the Imager
- Insert the SD card into your Pi and plug in your USB controller
- Connect your Pi to a TV or monitor via HDMI and power it on
- RetroPie will boot and immediately prompt you to configure your controller - press each button when asked
- Transfer your game files to the Pi via USB drive or network share
- Select a system from the main menu and start playing
Tips
RetroPie supports multiple controllers at once, so you can plug in two USB controllers for local multiplayer. The Raspberry Pi 4 can handle N64 and some PSP games, while the Pi 3 is perfect for everything up to SNES and Genesis.
