How to Set Up Project64 with a USB N64 Controller

Project64 is the most popular N64 emulator for Windows. It runs almost every N64 game perfectly, and setting it up with a USB N64 controller takes about 2 minutes. No drivers needed.

What You Need

A Windows PC, a USB N64 controller, and Project64 (free download).

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Download Project64 from pj64-emu.com - get the latest version
  2. Install it like any other program and open it
  3. Plug your USB N64 controller into any USB port on your PC
  4. In Project64, go to Options > Settings > Controller Plugin
  5. Select N-Rage Input Plugin or the default input plugin
  6. Click Configure and map your buttons - the controller should be auto-detected
  7. Load your N64 game file (File > Open ROM) and start playing

Tips

If your analog stick feels too sensitive, you can adjust the deadzone in the controller settings. Most USB N64 controllers are recognized instantly by Project64 with no additional configuration needed.
